Workshop Area - Changing Rear Discs and Pads

Firstly, jack up one/both sides of the car, undo all five wheel nuts and remove the wheel.

Place an axel stand under the chassis and block in front of the front wheels for safety.

Inside the car is a plastic cup holder in the centre by the handbrake, remove this, (lifts out, no screws), then you will see the handbrake cable tensioner, using a 10mm spanner loosen the nut thus releasing the tension on the handbrake.

Back at the rear of the car you will see the handbrake cable-retaining clip, remove this and also the spring clip (do not lose these). Pop the handbrake cable free, (if it is still a bit tight push the handbrake lever spring away from you with a screwdriver or other such item).

Now you can undo the bottom bolt with a 12mm socket and the caliper will hinge upwards enabling you to get to the pads out. Check to see if they are badly scored etc, and also inspect your discs for corrosion and score marks, if damaged etc consider replacing these ASAP.

Replace the old pads with your news ones, add a small amount of copper ease/slip to the faces to stop them sticking to the caliper housing.

Now you need to wind back the piston, yes wind unlike the fronts, which you can just push with a G clamp etc. I borrowed a caliper winding back kit (This allows the easy return of the brake piston into the caliper to provide clearance for new brake pads) from someone but a large screwdriver and a set of mole grips will do the job.

Now hinge back down the caliper, replace the bottom bolt, and tighten up. Reconnect the handbrake cable remembering to refit the retainer and spring clip. Back on with the wheel. Get in the car and pump the brake pedal a few times till it feels OK. Go back to the handbrake tensioner (cup holder position) and re-tension the cable so you get about 3-4 click (when pulling up the handbrake without pushing the button in.)

Once you are happy with all of the above, you can put the wheel back on re-tighten the nuts and lower the car.

Obviously this writeup covers one side but you will be doing both sides the car at the same time.

If you are replacing your rear discs, you will need to unbolt the caliper from the bracket, after undoing all the clips and and tie up for now

The pull off the old discs and pop on the new ones

then re-assemble as above
