What's New

Steve's FTOs - Mitsubishi FTO GPX - Brakes - Rear Brake Discs

At Autosport 2001on the EBC stand, I was told about the new EBC Drilled and Grooved rear discs, which they had just finished, so the next week I ordered them and paid on the credit card (January) with a promise of delivery in 1 week, well 3 weeks later no sign, this went on, and on and delivery was eventually achieved on 17 March 2001.

First problem
I was lead to believe these would be as all EBC Discs are, zinc plated, a phone call later informed me : NO these are Sejoc's own not EBC discs therefore not plated, but if I return them and wait 4 weeks this can be done, F**k that, so I took them to a local platers and got them done at £10 each (not refunded by Sejoc)

Second Problem
Before I got them plated I figured a test fit would be a good idea, I was right as they were had a totally wrong centre bore the originals had a 90mm bore the Sejoc ones had a 68mm bore Another phone call : No sir all GPX Rear discs are 68mm bore you must have aftermarket hubs (What Bullshit), so Off I went to a local machine shop to get them re-bored out, with the originals in hand to match exactly

Third Problem
Having fitted these new plated and re-bored discs things seemed fine for a day or two, then I noticed a strange knocking on braking and acceleration, this confused me for 2-3 weeks.....
I was taking off the wheels to clean them inside and out for a show and noticed that when pulling the wheel a bit the disc moved around and created that knocking I was hunting for.
The upshot is that the holes in the Sejoc discs are drilled 14mm for the M12 hub studs, this causes the knocking noise (No the wheels were tightened to 110 nm torque).
Another phone call : This is standard sir on all discs (more bullshit) the standard Misubishi discs are drilled 12.5mm dia not 14mm, so back to the machine shop for some adaptor rings to be manufactured up.

Whilst the braking has now been inproved I can't say much for the manufactures of these discs,
(but bear in mind this was in early 2001 so things might have changed now)
